Since 2016, the Ateneo's European Studies Program has received two Jean Monnet grants from the European Commission. They are awarded to institutions that demonstrate high levels of specialized expertise in EU affairs.
In 2024, a Jean Monnet Chair was awarded to Dr Manuel R. Enverga III. The distinction is awarded by the European Union to academics who have made recognizable contributions to research and teaching in the field of European Studies. He is the first Filipino, and only the fourth in Southeast Asia to have been awarded the title since it began over thirty years ago.
During his three-year term as Chair holder, he will work to expand European Studies in the Philippines through visiting lectures, the organization of events, teaching courses, publishing research, and producing episodes for his original show online, The Eurospeak Podcast.
This project was awarded a grant in 2020, with reference number 619942-EPP-1-2020-1-PH-EPPJMO-PROJECT. It aims to expand awareness and understanding of the nature and dynamics of the European Union in the Philippines. The regional bloc is increasingly significant in the country, because it is one of its investments, trade agreements, and development aid contributions.
1. Formulate a module that can be delivered to government, NGO representatives, and media professionals to help them understand the EU better.
2. Create a lesson plan that can be used by secondary school teachers teaching Social Studies subjects to deliver lessons on the European Union. The content will be disseminated through a workshop for secondary school teachers. A lesson plan would be particularly useful, since there are secondary school subjects that are required to teach about Europe and the EU, and no standard lesson plan exists for it.
3. Launch a free application that will teach young Filipinos in both primary and secondary levels of education about the basics of what Europe and the EU are.
